National Treasure: Illustration of Irises by Korin Ogata (17th century)
"Kakitsubatazubyobu" is a masterpiece of the Edo period artist Ogata Korin (1658-1716).
A cluster of iris flowers is vividly depicted in shades of ultramarine blue and verdigris on a six-fold folding screen made entirely of gold.
Behind it is a waka poem recited at Yatsuhashi, a famous spot for irises, in the 9th section of ``Ise Monogatari,'' heading east.
The irises are arranged rhythmically, taking into consideration the contrast between the left and right sides, and at first glance, the design of the iris flowers stands out, as some of the paper patterns are repeated, but the plumpness of the petals takes advantage of the characteristics of the pigment. It's a struggle.
The author, Korin Ogata (1658-1716), was born into a high-class kimono merchant in Kyoto and was courted by Sotatsu Tawaraya.
It is no exaggeration to say that this work represents not only the Edo period, but the entire history of Japanese painting.
